First of all, I would like to make a statement FYI :
THERE ARE NO BIOPHARMS and NEVER HAVE BEEN ANY in the USA. Since Hirudotherapy is gaining more popularity every day -- You deserve a clear explanation. If you are receiving hirudotherapy treatment from the therapist who is not certified in the USA and is not listed on the Academy of Hirudotherapy website (www.academyofhirudotherapy.org), ALWAYS VERIFY WHERE FROM HE/SHE IS OREDERING MEDICINAL LEECHES!

Hirudo Medicinalis and Hirudo Verbana, both Medicinal Leeches, are foreign species to North America. THERE ARE NO BIOPHARMS and NEVER HAVE BEEN ANY in the USA!
IN THE USA WE HAVE DISTRIBUTORS WITH BIO-LABS ONSITE.
Leeches used in Hirudotherapy in the USA are European medicinal leeches. They have been used for HIRUDOTHERAPY applications since the 1980's, in its invasive form in the hospitals, surgical & cosmetic procedures. Latly, leeches are used in non-invasive form -- only in the private practice offices that offer alternative & drug-less, natural bio- therapy with medicinal leeches.
For the last five years, at the Academy of Hirudotherapy, we are teaching and providing an intensive & thorough training in hirudotherapy. The interest and demand for hirudotherapy is increasing. However, there are lots of misconceptions, conflicting information and inadequate conclusions about LEECHES per se.
Medicinal Leeches come strictly from the controlled, sterile environment in European countries--UK, France,indirectly from Poland, to the DISTRIBUTORS in the USA. MEDICINAL LEECHES ARE ONLY DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT the USA and Canada by the FDA APPROVED SUPLIERS, such as Carolina Biological Supplier, NC, LeechesUSA in Westbury, NY. (see links below).

Medicinal Leeches, along with Medicinal Maggots, were FDA approved in 2004. North American leech, Macrobdela Decora has not been used in hirudotherapy research and HT
applications - they are not effective therapeutically.
Hirudo Orientalis, an Asian medicinal leech, IS NOT APPROVED AND NOT
USED for hirudotherapy in the USA since it comes from the wild, non-control environment and is not approved by FDA.
Any advertising and solicitation through the Internet about a “delivery" from Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, etc. is misleading and fraudulent.

In hirudotherapy we use only:
ME-DI-CI-NAL LEECHES NOT - ME-DI-CAL
- Me-di-ci-nal = having curative values, having healing qualities (leeches, maggots, bees, herbs, etc.)
- Me-di-cal = related to medicine (medical equipment, medical devise, medical school, medical supplies, etc.)
